At
CIUDAD’s recent conference on “Reconciling Urban Growth
with Conservation in Arizona’s Desert Environment: Challenges for
Science and Education,” speakers were asked to focus on the major
urban growth and conservation issues facing Arizona’s desert environments
in this decade and how science and education can aid in the development
of innovative strategies for integrating conservation and environmental
quality into urbanizing landscapes. In addition, we asked speakers to address
the major issues, challenges, and/or opportunities related to urban growth
and conservation in Southern Arizona from their perspective. Final panel
discussion centered around the role that science and education can play
in helping to reconcile urban growth with conservation in arid environments.
These discussions brought together a diverse group of policy makers, resource managers, scientists, landowners, planners, and others and were valuable in prioritizing future research and education projects for CIUDAD. The following pages summarize the main themes discussed, the potential roles science and education can play, priority areas for CIUDAD, and CIUDAD’s next steps.
