Announces its 2nd Annual Conference:

Working across scales and boundaries: forging effective cooperation between local, county, state and federal conservation efforts.

Thursday, June 3, 2004 at the Science and Technology Park in Tucson


Invited speakers include Gary Paul Nabhan, Director of the Center for Sustainable Environments at Northern Arizona University, and Charles Redman, Director of Arizona State University’s Center for Environmental Studies and the Consortium for the Study of Rapidly Urbanizing Regions. They will examine the state of our knowledge about urbanization and ecology and the need to integrate conservation across political and geographical scales.

Case studies and a panel of stakeholders will discuss conservation initiatives launched at the local, county, state and federal levels in our region, including:

1. Pima County’s Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan
2. The Cienega Corridor Conservation Council
3. Proposed State Trust Land reforms

Of particular interest will be the future of the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan following the bond election of May 18th. The conference will conclude with a consideration of the role of science and research in resolving southern Arizona’s conservation challenges.
